Lessons learned from Covid

Hybrid in person Teaching to Online classes

I actually feel extremely lucky that I was able to start my student teaching in person. It was strange, and difficult to say the least but I was able to create a crazy routine out of my days at the elementary level. We sat 2 students per table, created lines on the floor for line-up and enforced hand washing all while sanitizing crayons, pencils, markers , you name it. We would rotate freshly sanitized pencils with already clean pencils between class rotations. We taught K thru 5th grade from 8 am to 2:45. 10 Minutes in between classes to spray seats, tables, faucets and any supplies last used and any surface touched. It was a busy day when all of the extra tasks are added. I loved every moment I had in person with all those little ones (TQS IIIA).

Going remote in High School

I had just a few in person weeks with my high schoolers. It was important to me to make connections so that when we transferred to online learning I would have a bit of rapport to work with (TQS IIIA). Only a few of our students show their faces during class. We have been offering extra credit if their camera was on for 80% of the class time. We have worked with issues like having to set administrative boundaries so that students can't mute us or kick us off the meeting, believe me it has happened! By setting the expectations and being mutually respectful it creates an engaging, positive learning environment. Online learning does takes time, creativity, persistence.
